Birthdays! Birthdays! And more to come!

April has been an endless month of birthday celebrations. It started out with Dan's daddy's b'day. We had a dinner celebration at a restaurant in Bukit Tinggi Klang, which its name I do not remember. If I'm not mistaken, its called Ichiban Seafood Restaurant or someting similar to that. Unfortunately, the food served wasn't to our satisfaction. Not only did the food tasted awful, but the service wasn't up to par either. However the pandan b'day cake that Dan's mum purchased, was really yummy :)

Just last Sunday, we celebrated 3 b'days in church with a delicious carrot cake from Secret Recipe, which cost RM 56++. In my opinion Secret Recipe has the best carrot cake, and accompanied with the most delicious cheesy icing on the top. Mmmm....
The April boys; my dad, EK and Victor.

In the evening, we went over to TGIF in Subang Parade to celebrate Caryn's (Dan's sis) b'day.

We had a light but yummy ice-cream cake for her b'day, and lots of mouth-watering dishes from TGIF; comprising of lamb chop, seafood platter, salads and appetizers. My only regret is that I did not take any pics of the food *sobs
The following day, Monday, was my dad's b'day. He turned 50 :) We celebrated his b'day at Pantai Seafood Restaurant, which is situated in Damansara, PJ.

We had deer meat. The meat was tender and succulent *drools

Kai Lan. Thumbs up!
Kampung chicken. Not my favourite dish, but it was good.

Japanese taufu with Peking sauce.

Butter fried mantis prawn. I love this! Crunchy a
nd juicy!

Long beans and brinjals.

Marmite crabs. The sauce was flavourful, but the crab wasn't too fresh.

The total bill came to about RM200++. Overall, a truly satisfying meal :)

Dan bought the b'day cake from Cake Sense, Taman Megah. Forest of Fruits, RM 39++. The cake wasn't to our expectation. Not worth splurging on. We both randomly selected the cake. We'll do better next time *hee

The happy 50 year old man :P

And after having a wonderful dinner, we had the best dessert ever. Thanks to Dan, of course :) My favourite - durians! *heeDan and I bought the durians from Taman Megah, PJ. RM 10 per kg. The durians tasted excellent! Too bad my tummy couldn't take in more.

It has been an endless makan series for Dan and I. Tmr will be the final round; a belated April birthday celebration for 2 other special friends :) Therefore, there'll be more food updates soon :)

And to all friends and readers, Happy Labour Day!

Gigs, gigs and more gigs!

I got a last minute call to stand in for a gig at The Social in Bangsar last Saturday. It's a place located at
No 57-59 Jalan Telawi 3 Bangsar Baru 59100 Bangsar Wilayah Persekutuan

I was playing with the Jordan Rivers Band; Jordan on guitars and vocals, his son Steve on drums and sax maestro Azmi. And I rate this gig WR (Watch for Relaxation).

Cool thing bout the Social is they have pool tables, tv with football/ or any sports and Kilkenny beer.
Prices of food and drinks are pretty reasonable.

And.....coming up this week. I'll be doin Gina Panizales' album launch at Bangkok Jazz, Chulan Square this Wed (30th April). This gig is rated MW. There's goin to be a number of press', media and musicians in the house. So come join in the fun. Admission is free and we start at 8.30pm. For reservations call
03-4260 2288. You can also reach me for directions etc at 017-3388316.

And last but not least, this Fri (2nd May), I'll be filling in at Alexis Bistro, Great Eastern Mall Ampang backing the divo of swing :
Mr. Sharizan.
I'm not sure if there's cover charge as listings on next month's gig is not out yet but I think it's free admissions. Either, cover charge should be no more than RM20.
This gig is rated WR. Come by for some good ol' fashion swing jazz and of course not forgetting the great food, deserts, cakes and wine.

Call 03-4260 2288 for reservations.

Pancake Fiesta!

Last Saturday, Dan and I went over to Mid Valley in search of durian pancakes, which I got to know about from a food blog.
Our search was indeed a successful one :)
Actually we almost missed it, thinking that it was a shop. In real fact, its just a small stall with a single food refrigerator, which is located at the lower ground floor of The Gardens.

The durian pancake!

Tasted heavenly, with real pieces of durians, coated with cream and wrapped with a single thin layer of crepe.
Dan said durians still tasted best on its on, and I definitely agree with him :)

They also sold mango pancake.
It tasted good, but nothing beats durians *hee :P Both are sold at 2 for RM4 or 6 for RM10.
Do give it a try, and keep your eyes open for a small refrigerator between the lower ground floor of Mid Valley and The Gardens. Their called Lee Lee's Sumptuous Desserts.

For lunch, we had more pancakes! *yummy! :P~
We went over to Paddington House of Pancakes for oven-baked pancake. This particular pancake takes approximately 30 minutes for preparation and baking, but it is seriously worth the wait.

The oven-baked pancake is light and crunchy! *hmmm... And served in a hot pan *ouch!

The pancake is filled with generous amount of maple syrup and fruits; plums, peaches, strawberries, including pineapples! It cost roughly RM35++
And a tip for all readers, it is very feeling to the tummy - so you might want to share this with a friend or two :)

Other than pancakes, we've been having lots of cakes too. Quite a handful of April babies, and we're still not done celebrating *hee. Hence we'll update the rest soon. Happy drooling! :P

Something from the mail: the meaning of Love

A group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4 to 8 year-
olds, 'What does love mean?'
The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined. See what you think:

'When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend
over and paint her toenails anymore.
So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love.'
Rebecca- age 8

'When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different.
You just know that your name is safe in their mouth.'
Billy - age 4 (Man this one is deep!)

'Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and they go out and smell each other.'

Karl - age 5

'Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs.'
Chrissy - age 6

'Love is what makes you smile when you're tired.'
Terri - age 4

'Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK.'

Danny - age 7

'Love is when you kiss all the time. Then when you get tired of kissing, you still want to be together and you talk more.

My Mommy and Daddy are like that. They look gross when they kiss'
Emily - age 8

'Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen.'

Bobby - age 7 (Wow and DOUBLE Wow!)

'If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate,'

Nikka - age 6 (we need a few million more Nikka's on this planet)

'Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it everyday.'

Noelle - age 7

'Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well.'

Tommy - age 6

'During my piano recital, I was on a stage and I was scared.

I looked at all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling.
He was the only one doing that. I wasn't scared anymore.'
Cindy - age 8

'My mommy loves me more than anybody.
You don't see anyone else kissing me to sleep at night.'
Clare - age 6

'Love is when Mommy gives Daddy the best piece of chicken.'
Elaine-age 5

'Love is when Mommy sees Daddy smelly and sweaty and still
says he is handsomer than Brad Pitt.'

Chris - age 7

'Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day.'

Mary Ann - age 4

'I know my older sister loves me because she gives me all her old clothes and has to go out and buy new ones.'

Lauren - age 4 (We all need to think more like this!!!)

'When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you.'

Karen - age 7 (What an image)

'Love is when Mommy sees Daddy on the toilet and she doesn't think it's gross.'

Mark - age 6

'You really shouldn't say 'I love you' unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget.'

Jessica - age 8

And the final one -- Author and lecturer Leo Buscaglia once talked about a contest he was asked to judge. T he purpose of the contest was to find the most caring child.

The winner was a four year old child whose next door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife.
Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman's yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there.
When his Mother asked what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy said, 'Nothing, I just helped him cry.'

Shopping with bagels

Yesterday, Dan and I had a tiring time at KLCC. Shopping for the perfect pair of jeans is an extremely tedious task. We checked out practically every clothing outlet that sold denim, and it wasn't easy finding a plain pair of denim. Most of it had the worn and torn design, or some ugly embroideries. After scavenging for hours, we finally found the perfect pair for me at Levi's :)
My first Levi's jeans

Yup, it was perfect. Price on the other hand, was beyond perfection *haha At first, was a lil reluctant to get it, because it was $$$$$!! But I really, really, really like it, and I was so tired of searching any further, I gave in and now, it's mine! :P Thank you darling Dan, I appreciate it whole-heartedly :)

I don't know about you guys, but shopping always makes me hungry. All the walking and searching, drained me! Hence we had bagels for dinner!! *drools. The last time we had Vienna bagels was last year.
Mexitaliano! The jalapeño chillies was burning spicy! But I like it very much. I think Dan liked it too, or maybe he just wanted to eat the chillies because I was complaining about its spiciness.

Surprisingly Cheddar! Nothing extravagant.

Cinnawhite! The best among the three. The cinnamon wasn't too strong, and the cream wasn't too sweet. Absolutely wonderful! *hee

Overall their worth each penny spent. Three bagels used to cost only RM7.50, now its RM 8 for three. Everything is getting more, and more expensive *eeks! 0_0

We also had spinach and cheese pie from King Pie for dinner. Unfortunately, I did not take any pic of it, was too hungry :P The pie was scrumptious and feeling to the tummy. It cost RM7.50/8.00 per pie.

As always, I'd an enjoyable time (Hopefully for Dan too, cause I sort of burnt a hole in his wallet :p).

Fantasy Academy is not an adult film company.

My intern supervisor was doing the programming for week 5 Akademi Fantasia held last saturday 19th of April. She did some sequencing of percussion loops, strings and any extra instrumentation that the house band did not have. However, she couldn't make it for soundcheck on friday so i did it for her.

While the music was sent to the FOH (front of house) , monitors and broadcasting; the click track was sent to the musicians in-ear monitors. So all i had to do was play the already bounced tracks according to their songs in Cubase.

The nice view from the audience and tv isn't an accurate information of what the stage actually is. A lot of it is beautified by the lighting and props.

These backstage are only 2% of what you'll see backstage
when it comes to live performance involving a live band and live broadcasting.

AND NOW................PRESENTING the iPHONE ;)

Friday, April 18, 2008

Should I?

Dan will be busy tmr, hence I'm left to rot at home *crawls into a corner and sulks.

Anyway, if you have plans to attend Academi Fantasia tmr, you might see him around.
And if all the contestants sound really good tmr, credit goes to him *hee :P

Not many know this, actually no one - not even Dan, but I'd once considered auditioning for Academi Fantasia. Yeah, I find it hard to believe it too *hee
Truth be told, I wanted to audition for various competitions before; Malaysian Idol, One In A Million, for some theater production etc.
However I'd never found the courage to actually do so, due to the discouragements of my parents - to them, its just a waste of time.
In addition, reality kicked in - I'm a good singer, but not a great singer, and I know being good isn't enough. Hence I'll just remain as a singer for church :)

I used to participate in many talent and sketch competitions in school, but books were always the main priority.
Thus I ended up majoring in food science and nutrition, which isn't such a bad thing.
I'm surrounded with food constantly *hee
Who wouldn't envy me, right? :P

I thought of auditioning for a local movie production. Dan has encouraged me to give it a try, since I've always wanted to.
I'm considering it, but I don't have much time left since the deadline is end of April.
So what should I do?
Take the unfamiliar path and risk it all, or just remain as I am?

Linguini is not an Italian artist ....

This is wat i had during my gig at La Bodega tonight. It's a Linguini with mushrooms and turkey ham.
It has "big button mushrooms" ( i'm sure they have a specific name for it like 'British-coat buttons' or Indian Wild button mushrooms) , turkey ham, and bacon.
So i think it should be called Linguini with bacon, mushrooms and turkey ham. It was pretty scrumptious; and with a little black pepper and chilli flakes....yummyyy.
I also had the melon-berry crush but they didn't use real berries.

The budget ran out really fast today..i wonder why..didn't have a chance to get a second drink or desert.

Cass tagged me...so i have to do this...

Hello!!! Eye-am prom the Peellipins

I haven't been updating bout my gigs or where i'll be playing lately cuz apparently nobody cares. O_o
Well, i can't expect my friends to come watch me play ALL the time. And i don't play for an indie/underground band that revolves around groupies, posers and easily excitable listeners. Yes yes, i'm being a little blunt...(sorry all u underground bands/singer-songwriters, not criticizing u or your music; just talking bout the situation in M'sia)
But recently, i haven't felt the pride or rather the excitement of playing becuz most venues are cutting down on budget. Hence, this usually means a band downsizing. Or, they are too darn stupid to get an entertainment license and thus do not see the need to get proper equipment. In this case, the drums go first and automatically persons who deal the gig would minus a drummer. This will then lead to either a percussionist
( best choice) or a keyboard with programmed drums. O_o
In case u don't quite understand the situation, picture this: Have u ever been to a bistro/cheap motel/club where they have 2 girls usually Filipinos, and a guy playing a keyboard ? SOunds like CRAP!!! Looks like crap also. The singers usually look like some mid-age aunties and the keyboardist looks like an alcoholic...no offense but i don't play music to encourage gigs like that, i play to help the music industry grow bigger and better.
It's not like i haven't played without a drummer, it's just the idea that really turns me off. And guess WHAT??? Tonight i'm doin a gig at La Bodega Pavillion with a keyboardist on programmed drums and 2 singers. BUt we're better cuz we're playing in La Bodega and we're Chinese HAHAHAHA. (Plus, we're not doing stuff from Shakira or Britney Spears. )
(DISCLAIMER) Don't get me wrong, work is work and sometimes musicians get unfavorable jobs as well. And i am grateful to be earning decent legal money. But i really enjoy playing with a drummer and the keyboard drums is no where near a drummer...

So from now onwards, i'll try my best to post bout where i'll be playing and the ratings to my gigs are as following:

MW - Must Watch : Big, big , big shows like jazz fest/ music fest. Great music and large audience.

WW - Worth Watching : New material / rare material. Usually a jazz / R & B gig with known/famous/ heard-off ppl.

WR - Watch for Relaxation : Something medium, probably jazz / pop stuff that's common and enjoyable.

WM - you Won't Miss anything : Normal gig/ or can be abnormal/ excitable like no drummer.

Today : 17th April La Bodega, Pavillion. Pop, a bit of jazz and a drummer hiding in the keyboard. ( rated WM)
8.30pm. NO cover charge. Toilets entrance free. Parking flat rate RM5 ( i think)

Other happenings: Bangkok Jazz jam session 9.30pm onwards. Free of charge. With flat rate coupon parking RM3. ( rated WR )

Mitsubishi EVOLUTION

EMOLUTION:

TO ALL U GIRLS WHO LIKE MAT SALLEHS!!!

Cass is spending a bit more time reading other ppl's blog cuz she says i don't update ours....Therefore i'm gonna recycle my post from my old blog site.

This happened bout a year plus back at Top Room:

A peculiar conversation with sone ppl a half an hour before we started playing that night.

(Group of mat sallehs, 2 asian women and 1 local man)

Asian woman 1 : so there is a band tonight?
Me : Yes... (smiling .... can't u see the pno gtr and bass all set up.. for exhibition i it??!!)
Asian woman 1 : Who's playing are u guys playing?
Me: Yes we are.
Asian woman 2: ( flirting with mat salleh 1)
Asian woman 1 : U all look so young....wat's ur band called?
Me : (young?...ok so are u into pedophilia?) hehe...yea. We're currently known as the Giant Timeline and have been playing around in functions and events.
Asian woman 2 : ( continues flirting with mat salleh 1)
Mat Salleh 2 : (Stares and smiles with dignified body posture)
Asian woman 1 : It's so interesting to see young ppl playing jazz.
Me: hehe...thank you.
(See? playing? we're about to start in 30mins so make ur comments then).
Mat Salleh 2 : She didn't say good...she said interesting.
Me: Ok enjoy the night. (you numbskulls...)

That table of 7 pax left 5 mins prior to our drummer done setting up the cymbals after approx. 4 pints of beer.

Moral of the story: young ppl should stick to Click 5, Kelly Clarkson and ....hell i don't even know who's hot in the pop market lately. And err, am i a racist if i say 'Mat Sahllehs are dumb' ? Just asking, i'm not actually saying it.

This either means we're old or too old for our looks or too young for our brains or too confused about musical genre classification. Did i mention that they asked if we're below 20 yrs old....oh such compliments......

Monday blues

I've been moody and cranky lately.
Hence I'll refrain myself from updating, cause I'll just end up ranting.
I think I'm having a series of mood swings.
Being stuck in the office for the whole day, and staring into the computer screen from dawn to sunset does no good, makes me more crabby.

I wish you were here with me all the time.
I wish I could substantialize my need and desire for you.
You've never once failed to make me feel better, and happier.
I miss you terribly...

Everyone do the Salsa! Arrrr....

It's been more than awhile since Dan and I updated this blog. We're both quite busy with work and studies, so this blog has been left abandoned for the rats to feast on *hee

There's actually a number of things to update on, but the most interesting one would be the Genting Jazz Festival that was held on the 4th & 5th of April.
Dan and I had the privileged of attending the event for free!
Yups, FREE! Due to kindness of Dan's cousin Elaine. Thanks a bunch!

It was my first time, while it was the second for Dan. We both had a really good time; music was good, the weather was also good, but food was pricey.

I'll just let the pictures do the talking for me :)

The Cameroon band. The bass player was either high or high *hee

On the second night, with Dan and Elaine

We look cute right? *hahaha

The Malaysian Band; Junkofunk. Thumbs up! Malaysia boleh ok!

I felt that they were the best band; Hamilton de Holanda from Brazil! Ole?

Spectators doing the Salsa!

Key Elements from Singapore. Nothing to shout about - mediocre performance

There were 5 bands for each night. I had a good time, so did Dan. Definitely looking forward to the next one, next year :)

Something from the mail:

These are from a book called Disorder in the American Courts, and are things people actually said in court, word for word, taken down and now published by court reporters who had the torment of staying calm while these exchanges were actually taking place.
